Don’t Be Intimidated, Go to the right Gym – Motivation from Marlboro Personal Trainer Mike Hanley

Mike Hanley is a certified personal trainer and owner of the Training Studio in Marlboro, New Jersey.

So you’ve made up your mind, you want to get healthier, maybe shed a few pounds or build muscle – and you’re ready to start working out at the gym. But you don’t go because you’re intimidated. It happens to almost everyone. People wonder if they are too out of shape to work out at a gym. Or you are surrounded by people who seem to know all the machines and equipment, who are already in great shape, and you are worried that you will stick out or somehow draw attention to your novice self. Or maybe the gym staff is unfriendly or not easily approached, and you have a lot of questions but no one to answer them.

It’s completely normal to think about these things or other concerns whenever you start a new exercise program. But while some gyms may actually foster those intimidating atmospheres, not all do. And you should tour gyms like you tour homes, looking for one that feels welcoming to you.

As a personal trainer, I’ve seen all types of people walk through my door. There are the “pros,” people who think they know everything and walk around like they own the place. And the wallflowers, who approach each piece of equipment and exercise as if something is going to bite them. And my job – above all others – is to make sure that you are comfortable with what you are doing, and that it is healthy and appropriate for your goals. Working out should never be intimidating, you should be in a friendly atmosphere where you know you can ask questions, and where the trainers and staff have the time and expertise to help you create a program that will get you to your goals.

Build Your Confidence at the Gym

If you decide to start exercising, there are some things you can do to make the experience easier and more enjoyable:

Schedule an orientation. Try the gym out before you make a decision. Many of the chains and local gyms will offer you an opportunity to try the gym for a few days to see if it works for your goals and lifestyle. Take advantage of this opportunity, speak to members and staff, and get a good understanding of what the place offers you.

Hire a personal trainer. A good personal trainer will sit down with you to understand your overall exercise goals, perform a basic assessment of your current physical fitness, and show you around – teaching you how to use the equipment. An educator of proper form, and an overall cheerleader for your fitness, a personal trainer may be the best investment you can make in your health.

Use the buddy system. Don’t like to go it alone? Simple solution is to find a friend who shares your interest in getting healthier and exercising, and encourage them to join with you. Your mutual support will keep you motivated and build confidence.

Avoid peak hours. Gyms are generally busy before normal work hours, at lunchtime, and right after 5:00, as people try to fit in a workout around their busy schedules. If you prefer fewer people in the gym with you, then find a time outside these peak hours to go.

It’s important to know that the gym isn’t for everyone. If you’re seeking a more personal experience, where someone is there for you, supporting you at every step, then you should consider working with a certified personal trainer – either at a home gym you have set up, or at a studio where the trainer works.

Be comfortable, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to speak up if you have concerns, pain, changing goals or anything else. If you follow these steps, then your workouts should be enjoyable – keeping you motivated to reach your goals.
