Avoid This Risky Weight Loss Shortcut!

There are a lot of exercise tips and tricks that we hear on a daily basis that are just flat out dangerous. New clients and high school athletes come in replete with stories of new ways to cut weight or quickly “bump up” their exercise results. But believe me when I tell you: there are NO shortcuts to your long term fitness goals.

A most devastating example- A young mother is currently suing the Marine Corps alleging that their extreme training for her overweight son led to his death. The lawsuit alleges that recruiters took an overweight, but otherwise healthy, 22 year old to the gym, dressed him in a scuba suit and wrapped him in plastic bags, and made him workout in 100 degree weather – all in the name of helping him drop weight faster. The young man collapsed and when paramedics arrived they found he had a temperature of 108 degrees. A horrifying tragedy, the young recruit was abusively trained in a manner that essentially cooked his internal organs, leading to systemic failure.

This may be a an extreme example but it’s not too far from home when considering sports like wrestling and mixed martial arts competitors frequently trying to make weight in quick time.  Beware of such drastic weight loss shortcuts. Wrapping yourself in a plastic bag or other apparel to help you sweat more when you run or bike is not the way. If you don’t sweat enough without those things, then you need to change up what you are doing to make it more challenging for your body. And it is incredibly important to be aware of how you feel as you workout. Don’t ignore it if you feel lightheaded or dizzy, it is your body’s way of telling you that you’re pushing past your limits. Be sure you drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated and help lower your internal temperature.

Drink Fluids

There is no shortcut to physical fitness. It takes time, hard work and recuperative rest in between workouts to build your endurance, strength and help you drop the pounds. And remember, you didn’t put the weight on in one day, so you can’t expect to lose it in one either. Taking a few months to exercise properly will help you create healthy habits and make working out a part of your lifestyle. So leave the trash bags where they belong and get your sweat on the right way – safely!
